SURF & SURF SEASONS

June-August | July-November -Kite surf season

Cloudbreak is an awe inspiring perfect left, but it can get sectiony. It starts to work at 2 feet and can handle swells in excess of 20 feet. Wave choice is critical. There are three main sections: the point (also called “the top”), the middle, and the inside (also called “Shish Kabobs”). The inside looks like the safest bet to most newcomers, but the boat drivers will tell you otherwise. The point and the middle are actually more rippable. The inside is called “Shish Kabobs” for a reason: the reef gets really shallow and it is very sharp. Cloudbreak is a difficult wave to surf, but it can guarantee you some serious tube time. Remember don’t drop in!

Restaurants-is a long shreddable top to bottom left hander. With many barrelling sections and very shallow reef this is one of the best waves in the area. It is right in front of Tavarua’s restaurant and is one of the most perfect, machine-like waves on Earth. The ideal size for Restaurants is between 3-8 feet with a medium to high tide essential to cover up the dangerous reef that lurks below. It is typically half the size of Cloudbreak and requires a slightly larger swell to break but when it does it has to be one of the best lefts anywhere.

Tavarua Rights – is a seldom surfed, but occasionally good right located on the windward side of Tavarua Island. Most of the time South Easterly winds plague the right with less than desirable conditions but when conditions change it turns into a right barrel at size and a fun, rippable wave when it’s small.
Swimming Pools –Very nice barelling fast right-hander over a shallow reef. Not usually crowded this is a spot that some people miss.
Namotu Lefts-Is a long rolling right which is like a full Cloudbreak. Fun wave to get your teeth into and when its bigger starts to barrel. The current can be an issue here but it is still a fun rippable wave.

Wilkes- is an open-ocean reef-pass wave northwest of Namotu Island, totally exposed to swell and all wind, rising straight out of very deep water at the southern tip of Malolo Barrier Reef. It’s a fairly reasonable take-off followed by a long, warping wall with some great speed sections, ending in a shallow bowl. A good regular-foot’s alternative to Namotu Left or Tavarua.
Desperations– is around 5-10 minutes past Wilkes, has several peaks, both lefts and rights. When the surf is too small or crowded at Wilkes, Desperation is your best bet. This break is usually 1-2 ft higher than the other nearby breaks. Not the best choice if the waves are too big, because the several peaks and extra size makes it more like a beach break and difficult to get out of the inside.
Hideaway- Half way down the coral coast is a high tide surfing spot with a short gnarly wave that has big open barrels. It is one of Fiji’s only beach accessible breaks. It has a very dangerous channel that is more like a crack in the reef. Experienced surfers only.
